Wyoming Elk

I just returned from South West Wyoming hunting elk with a good friend of mine Jeff Short.  We did a 9 day hunt using Jeff’s 3 horses to get us into a 9,600ft basin in the Wyoming Range.

Warm weather kept the rut from getting cranked up and the elk quiet except early in the morning and just before dark. We covered a lot of ground, heard and saw a lot of elk but could not get the shot we needed at a bull.

I wanted to share with you a few photos of our hunt.  This is always a sobering time of year as the bowhunting seasons for deer and elk come to a close.

Please send in your photos for our “In The Field” album at album@kuiu.com.  I love sharing these photos and bragging about all of you to my friends, family and industry.

I hope all of you have had a great fall.

This Weeks Subscriber Promotion

This week’s Subscriber Promotion is the Merino 185 Beanie & Neck Gaiter sold as a set for $29.99 to the first 50.  This set normally sells for $39.98. This is amazing value for 17.5 micron Merino Wool from The Merino Company.

Click Here for the Merino 185 Beanie & Gaiter promotion.

If you are on the fence about the neck gaiter once you own one you will wonder how you survived without it.  It is multi-purpose; The neck gaiter turns your Merino 185 beanie into a balaclava, it is a great face mask and keeps the cold off you neck when you are glassing.  At 3/4 of an ounce it is a no brainer, especially at this promo price.

Going Ultra Ultra Light?

Kowloon, Hong Kong

Hong Kong Bay

I am in Hong Kong this week to source & review new developments and technologies for 2012 & 2013 products. This past year I have challenged KUIU’s supply partners to develop new products using innovation and technology to reduce weight without giving up performance.

I met with Toray today and reviewed several new fabric developments they have been working on for KUIU. Toray met the challenge and has developed some AMAZING light weight products. Next-level technology for ultralight layering.  I believe these new fabric developments will further reduce your layering system weight by 2 to 3 pounds. These new lightweight fabrics are quiet, durable and use a very high grade of yarn to insure quality and performance that Toray requires.

My vision and goal for KUIU is to continue to take weight out of your gear; How light we can go without giving up performance?  Is this important to you?  I know it is to me.  I always appreciate your input and feedback to make sure KUIU is heading the right direction for the future.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to comment.  Your feedback is what makes KUIU great!

Kansas Turkeys

Archie, Nathan & Jason with Archie’s Bird

I received an invitation from Nathan Andersohn to join him, Archie Nesbitt & Steve Fiarchuk for a 4-day turkey hunt on Nathan’s farm in Kansas.  I flew into Denver on Friday morning meeting Nathan, Steve & Archie for a 5-hour drive to Kansas.

Steve was Nathan’s guide for Dall sheep, when Nathan shot his first sheep on the way to the first Grand Slam by a longbow hunter.  Steve now owns and operates Christina Falls Outfitters in North West British Columbia and specializes in bowhunts for Mountain Goats, Canadian Moose, Elk and Stone Sheep.  Steve has been a life long guide and outfitter, which gave us a lot to talk about. Steve has guided his clients to an incredible 86 rams as a professional guide.

I first met Nathan yeast ago at the FNAWS convention in Reno. One Nathan’s biggest dreams has been to own his own farm, instill conservation and wildlife management practices to create a private hunting preserve.  His 400-acre farm purchased 4 years ago is everything he has dreamt about and more.  Besides being absolutely beautiful, this place is loaded with big Kansas Whitetails, Turkeys, Quail, Doves and Rabbits.  It is truly a sanctuary and I felt privileged to hunt in such an amazing place.

This was my first trip to Kansas and this is exactly how I pictured it.  Rolling hills with corn, wheat and alfalfa that frame a river bottom loaded with hardwoods and dense cover.  In the center of the property, Nathan converted the old horse stable, built in the early 1900’s, into a classic 800 square foot hunting cabin that includes a tin roof, wood burning stove and front porch. There is an old limestone mansion that sits above the cabin built by the family who originally owned this property at the turn of the century, which adds to the feel, and lore of this farm.

On Saturday morning I had the pleasure of calling in Archie’s 1st ever Turkey.  I felt honored to be part of Archie’s bird, a man who has hunted the world and set over 88 world records with a bow and arrow.  He is a very humble, generous and gracious.  Archie has a new show on the Sportsman’s Channel I recommend called The Ultimate Shot.  Archie hunts lions, leopard, Cape buffalo and other dangerous game throughout the world.  He showed us one if his 1st shows and his footage it is seriously breathtaking!

Enclosed is a photo essay of our four days down on the farm.  I hope you enjoy the photos and have the chance to hunt Kansas sometime.  It is a remarkable place.
