Icon Size Range

What is the Icon size range? Specifically what torso length range will it fit.  After getting these questions from customers and going back through our site, I realized I did not do a very good job with size information for the Icon. My apologies, below is sizing information quoted directly from the design team who laid out the sizing, dimensions and ergonomics of the Icon.  This should make it much more clear and easier to understand.

ICON Carbon Fiber Frame Size Range

Short answer: Should fit an optimal range of 17.5 – 22.5 inch torso.  But it could be stretched fit a 17.0 inch and up to a 23.0 inch torso.

Longer answer:  Shoulder pads can accommodate about a 3 inch range for every position bolt by tightening the shoulder pad webbing (this is how a single size back-panel frame would adjust with out the back channels).  The Icon’s channel nuts allow the bolt position to slide 3 inches (the portion that is normally fixed on a single size frame).  If you looked to maximize those two adjustment factors together, you get the 6 inches of range.

Most frames on the market can offer 3 to 4.5 inches of adjustment.  And there are some sloppy ones that adjust for big 8 or 9 inches ranges – but seldom perform well.    The beauty of ours is the cleanliness and canted angle on adjustment.

Context: Industry standards for medium size is about 18-20.5 inches, and large size about 19.5 – 22.0 (depends on manufacture, but Osprey and Arc’teryx would be good examples to compare to).  We aimed to hit both the medium and large size with the hunting demographic being most male and a bit larger than a more waif outdoor types.  The current icon will not fit super small nor super huge folks… but should perform well for the overwhelming majority of potential customers.

Torso Measurement:  This is the vertical measurement from the iliac crest (top of the hip bones) to C7 (largest vertebrae bump on lower neck).

Hope this helps…….Icon Design Team

My Fathers Day Present

I took my 3 1/2 year old son Cash on his first hog hunt last night with my friends Brad Helzer & Brian Morris.  We hunted Brad’s family’s ranch where right at dark we spotted several hogs coming into a wheat field.  I threw Cash on my back for the most adventurous “piggyback” (pun-intended) ride of his life.  We were able to cut this boar off, unload Cash off my back at the last second for me to take and make a 15 yard heart shot on this boar.  Cash was able to watch Daddy shoot and see the boar go down a few seconds later.  He looked at me with amazement in his face I have never seen before and said “Thank You Daddy”!

Absolutely, 100% the highlight of my hunting career!  I could not wait to share it with you all, what an amazing Father’s Day present!!  Have a great weekend and Happy Fathers Day to all of you.

Jason

Vias Camouflage

Last spring on the blog we discussed camouflage for KUIU.  We all agreed it would be best for KUIU to create a new pattern. The pattern requirements you suggested were earthtones, non-blobbing, visual confusion, high-contrast, distinctive and attractive. After reviewing the final version of the pattern this week in the field, we made the right decision, thank you.

Vias is a macro-camouflage pattern designed with light, medium & dark earth-tones to create visual confusion that breakups up the human outline at distance.  Vias is made up of 5 colors, a dusty tan, grey, dark grey, brown and black.  I designed the pattern to break up the human form on the horizontal axis in three place for the lower body and three places on the upper body with the light-tan color. You will see this when you look at the back of a jacket in the distinctive tan sections that run across the entire panel.  This is important for consistency of breaking up the body when the pattern is cut into small panels and sewn into a garment.  I did not want Vias become less effective when it is made into a pack or pants because of how the panels are aligned and sewn.

We shot Vias this week in as many situations as we could find so you could get a feel for this pattern.  The Sierra Nevadas have been pounded with snow lately which limited us to high desert environments east of Reno.  I can confidently tell you, Vias in dark timber past 10 yards will be almost invisible. Most of the photos enclosed are shot between 10 and 15 yards.  We did shoot further distances but you could not find Chris in the photos so I did not include these in this post.

I am very excited about this pattern and how effective it is at any distance and any environment.  I look forward to hearing your thoughts and opinions.
